New graduates and students


ALIA has a special student membership rate and new graduates can receive a reduced rate for two years after completing their courses. For more information about becoming an ALIA Member, please visit our membership pages.


ALIA’s Students and New Graduates Group and NGAC Committee work together to put on the biennial New Librarians’ Symposium in odd years. ?

In addition to the New Librarians’ Symposium, the?Students and New Graduates Group?put on professional development and networking events ?across the country specifically targeted toward students and new graduates.


ALIA awards and grants are available for new graduates. They include

  • The Twila Ann Janssen Herr Research Award for Disability Services is a biennial award of up to $5,000 that aims to provide an early career LIS practitioner with the opportunity to research or undertake a project.
  • The Metcalfe Award recognizes high achievement by a personal financial member in their first five years of practice in libraries and information services.



ALIA’s?Students and New Graduates Group?provides a forum for new graduates to communicate and socialize with colleagues and build relationships and networks within the profession.


ALIA’s New Generation Advisory Committee provides advice to the ALIA Board of Directors on issues of relevance to students and new professionals.?
