More than eight million of us are library members and we visit libraries around nine million times a month.

This Library Lovers’ Day – 14 February – the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) is asking library lovers to celebrate with their library.

ALIA CEO Sue McKerracher said: ‘Did I mention it’s Valentine’s Day as well? But in this week filled with passion – it’s a great time to share the library love.? Our libraries will be having events to celebrate and this is a day when a lot of library staff get a hug from their customers!’

‘Libraries and library teams across Australia provide so much for their communities—whether it is a hospital librarian providing the most up-to-date research for surgeons, a volunteer delivering audio books to the housebound, or a teacher librarian providing the foundations of lifelong literacy.’

Library Lovers’ Day is incredibly popular. Library teams run events and activities, including a blind date with a book or singles’ night in the library and customers love it.

Ms McKerracher said: ‘What’s a blind date with a book? Well, library staff encourage customers to choose a book based only on a description. Borrowers choose a book based on the descriptions without knowing the title of the book. Think of it like reading someone’s online dating profile.’

ALIA will be asking Members to share the library love story on Twitter (@ALIANational), using the hashtag #librarylove, and Facebook (facebook.com/ALIANational). Romance, books and libraries – it’s a heady combination! We’re looking forward to the library fun!

Here are a few facts about libraries in Australia:

There is one public library service point for every 15 000 people and more than seven out of ten public libraries are open for more than thirty hours per week?

Almost 171 million items were lent to 8.6 million members of Australia’s public libraries. There were more than 112 million visits annually or more than nine million a month

Almost 40 million items (1.7 items per person) were made available for the use of the community and more than $128 million was spent on ensuring these collections remain up to date and relevant (more than half of the collections are less than five years old)

There are 203 university libraries, used by around one million staff and students every year

There are more than 9,000 school libraries and some 12 million people visit our National, State and Territory libraries every year?

Behind the scenes, 2,000-plus special libraries provide services for business users, lawyers, health professionals, government officials and other information consumers.

Source: Australian Public Libraries Statistical Report 2013-2014, compiled by Regional Access and Public Libraries, State Library of Queensland

?

About the Australian Library and Information Association

The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) is the professional organisation for the Australian library and information services sector.
